Multi-scale modeling of distortion in the non-flat 3D woven composite part manufactured using resin transfer molding

This paper presents a multi-scale thermo-chemo-mechanical simulation predicting the distortion of 3D woven composite part manufactured using Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process. The numerical procedure relied on an anisotropic temperature- and degree cure-dependent viscoelastic constitutive law whose parameters were obtained from experimental data blackbox optimization algorithm. Analytical (at micro-scale) meso-scale) homogenization procedures used to compute effective coefficients thermal expansion chemical shrinkage. An actual non-flat specimen exhibiting variations in properties thickness was designed RTM contoured geometry digitized industrial optical scanner compared against developed predictions. It found that presented approach capable qualitative and, some cases, quantitative prediction with highest accuracy ~2.8% manufacturing induced geometrical distortions.
